15 Exotic Fruits of Bali, Indonesia

In Bali, most fruit is sold the day it is picked, not stored, unless it is exported. We really enjoyed going to the market in Bali and eating so many fresh exotic fruits each day from Dragon Fruit, Mangosteen, Durian, Coconut, Jackfruit to so much more. See below for the list and pictures of each fruit. Have you tried any of these fruits, which one was your favorite?

  1. Mangosteen – has a slightly sweet and sour flavor. The fruit is referred to as purple mangosteen because of the deep purple color its rind develops when ripe.
  2. Dragon Fruit – also known as pitaya or the strawberry pear, is a beautiful tropical fruit that is sweet and crunchy. 
  3. Durian – Roughly the size of a coconut or cantaloupe, and often even bigger, the durian fruit is green and spiky on the outside, with a soft flesh on the inside. 
  4. Coconut – more common are the green coconut, but the orange coconut offers a much tastier treat, the flesh is thinner and tender, and its water is more sweeter.
  5. Jackfruit: the big sweet tasting fruit, is found everywhere on the island.
  6. Rambutan -Bright red when ripe, they reveal a soft and cloudy white flesh with oval seeds. The flesh is sweet and succulent and easily separates from the seed. 
  7. Guava – Their fruits are light green or yellow skin and contain edible seeds. The guava leaves are used as an herbal tea and the leaf extract as a supplement. 
  8. Jambu Batu or Jambu biji, is a pear shaped fruit green to yellow with white or red meat.
  9. Bananas – come in many varieties are rather small but very sweet. Depending on the texture, the fruit will be eaten fresh or fried.
  10. Snakeskin Fruit – tastes sweet with a slightly starchy consistency, a mix between pineapple and Royal Gala apples.
  11. Soursop – Very soft when ripe, the green skin is easily pinched and peeled away by hand, or sliced with a knife to reveal its aromatic, pulpy and juicy flesh.
  12. Mango – the white mango of Bali has a very distinctive flavor and texture, found them at a random market in Canggu!
  13. Boni – bunches of small and round berries in white, reddish and black. With a taste ranging from biting sour to sweet, buni can be enjoyed as it is or add it to a salad mix.
  14. Javanese Plum – clusters of small round to oblong slightly sweet or acidic dark fruit. Also known as kala jamun.
  15. Lychee – has sweet white scented flesh, a large central stone, and a thin rough skin.
